Rembrandt’s “History Painting” at Trial: visual evidence, texts, interpretations

The subject of Rembrandt’s History Painting (1626) in Leiden’s Lakenhal museum remains unknown, despite scholars having proposed more than a dozen identifications.

At the occasion of the landmark exhibition Young Rembrandt, Rising Star, the Lakenhal and Leiden University (Department of Arts and Culture) invite scholars and students to a unique meeting. Presented with primary visual evidence, and testimony in texts, abstracts, and brief “witness statements” delivered in person, we will discuss this long-standing art historical enigma.

Monday 3 February, 12.00-15.30
