RUG - Assistant Professor in Art History 1800-now
Excellent research assessments and growing student numbers enable the Department of History of Art, Architecture, and Landscape of the University of Groningen to hire an Assistant Professor in Art History. We are looking for candidates with two areas of expertise within the period 1800-now. These can include, but are not limited to: art & nature, art & science, contemporary theory, craft, curatorial & museum studies, photography, technical art history, visual & material culture, and Western art in a global context.
Our department teaches the histories of art, architecture, and landscape from (trans)historical, theoretical, and practical perspectives and in relation to one another. Our English-taught BA programme attracts students from all over the world. It provides thorough knowledge of a critical, art historical canon, advances state-of-the-art methods and theories, and teaches in collaboration with professionals in museums and other cultural institutions. Our programme places great value on individual tutoring, writing and analytical skills, as well as experiencing and analysing works of art, architecture, and landscapes in situ. The MA track Art History & Curatorial Studies closely collaborates with (international) museums for its six months internship.
The successful candidate teaches at all levels of our BA programme and its interdisciplinary minors (Art & Religion, Modern & Contemporary Art), in the MA track Art History & Curatorial Studies and the interdisciplinary Research MA Arts, Media, and Literary Studies. Due to the integrated nature of our programmes, we welcome candidates, who are open to trans-historical and interdisciplinary perspectives and who can establish a relation between art history and the history of architecture and landscapes.
The research in our department focuses on early modern European art, art & material culture, and modern & contemporary art. We attract many PhD students and our active research community offers opportunities to develop collaborative, interdisciplinary projects within the Centre for Arts in Society and the Centre for Historical Studies (both part of The Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture, ICOG). Successful candidates are expected to actively contribute to this research environment and are provided support in applying for grants with national and international funding agencies.
In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for candidates who have:
• a PhD in Art History
• wide-ranging knowledge in the field of art history
• teaching experience at university level and proven didactic abilities
• gained the University Teaching Qualification or are prepared to do so within two years
• an excellent research track record, including international, peer-reviewed publications and experience with grant writing
• an outstanding national and international academic network
• contacts with professionals in the field
• organisational talent and experience
• excellent command of English (at least CEFR B2/C1 level for reading, listening writing and speaking), and the willingness to learn Dutch in due course
• experience with teaching in English.
The successful applicant is expected to:
• teach and supervise students in the department’s undergraduate and graduate programmes
• participate actively in curriculum development, design and administration of course modules
• carry out research and publish internationally
• participate actively in academic administration and committee work
• pursue research grants and other forms of external funding
• participate in local and national networks with art & heritage institutions
• participate in the research centre Arts in Society and other local and national research infrastructures
• participate in international research networks and build international collaborations.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary based on qualifications and experience between € 3,637 (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) and € 5,656 (scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position. On top of it, there will be an 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end-of-year allowance. Moreover, participation in a pension scheme for employees is part of the position. The appointment will initially be on a temporary basis for five years with the possibility of becoming permanent depending on a positive ‘Results and Development’ assessment as well as the needs of the programme. The assessment for a permanent position is possible from the third year onwards. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (cao NU).
