Fellowship Opportunities in American Art at the Smithsonian


The Smithsonian American Art Museum and its Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., invite applications for research fellowships in art and visual culture of the United States. 

A variety of predoctoral, postdoctoral, and senior fellowships are available. Fellowships are residential and support independent and dissertation research.
The stipend for a one-year fellowship is $30,000 for predoctoral fellows or $45,000 for senior and postdoctoral fellows, plus generous research and travel allowances. The standard term of residency is twelve months, but shorter terms will be considered; stipends are prorated for periods of less than twelve months.

Post-doctoral research fellowship Henry Moore Institute

The Henry Moore Institute is a world-recognised centre for the study of sculpture in the heart of Leeds. An award-winning exhibitions venue, research centre, library and archive, the Institute aims to expand the understanding and scholarship of historical and contemporary sculpture. It is supported by The Henry Moore Foundation, set up by the sculptor Henry Moore in 1977 to encourage appreciation of the visual arts, especially sculpture. 

The Institute invites applications for a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship. Based in Leeds, the focus of the Fellow’s research should be the study of pre-20th-century sculpture in the expanded field, paying particular attention to the ways in which history is engaged with the present. The Research Fellow will initiate public events relating to their own specialist research and take an active role within the Institute. 

Fellowship Specifications:

- The Research Fellow will take responsibility for the research, organization and realisation of one workshop (year 1) and one two-day international conference (year 2) at the Henry Moore Institute

- The Research Fellow will research, organize and realise one series of four public evening talks in relation to an exhibition of the researcher's choice within the Institute's programme.

- The Research Fellow will take an active role within the day-to-day activities of the Institute, assisting with the Research Team's work with Research Fellows and events.

- The Research Fellow will take part in Henry Moore Institute events and major staff meetings, providing additional academic response and feedback to research and exhibition development.

- The Research Fellow will deliver, as a representative of the Henry Moore Institute, at least two academic papers at conferences / universities /museums relating to the Fellow's own research.

- The Research Fellow will develop their own research by developing an exhibition / conference / publication proposal during the tenure, providing regular six-month updates to HMI staff at team meetings.

- The Henry Moore Institute Research Fellow will receive a grant of £21k per annum on a fixed two-year non-renewable contract payable quarterly. This grant is to cover living and all research associated expenses. The Fellow will be expected to be based at the Henry Moore Institute, and to work with the Research Team for a minimum of two days per week.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Art History, University of the Free

There is a wonderful research opportunity at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa for excellent Art Historians who have earned a Ph D in the last ten years. The idea is that he or she contribute to research at the University by finishing a book or several research articles for the credit of this university. It is worth R 200 000,00 p. a. and one can make an adequate living on that in South Africa.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE

The University of the Free State (UFS) is seeking 10 exceptional research fellows to conduct full-time postdoctoral research in any discipline. The value of the fellowship is R 200,000.00 per annum renewable for a maximum of three (3) years, to the most accomplished young and emerging researchers.

General selection considerations include the following:

1. Successful applicants will demonstrate exceptional academic performance and intellectual potential.
2. The selected cohort will reflect the University's equity and diversity imperatives, including those for gender, racial/cultural and intellectual diversity.
3.Successful applicants will demonstrate potential to contribute to the creation of knowledge in their future academic career, including person-embodied knowledge in the form of postgraduate research supervision.
4. Minimum requirement a PhD in the last 10 years
5. Postdoctoral fellow to commence fellowship by 01 August 2011 or soon thereafter.

Ziel der Preisvergabe ist die Nachwuchsförderung und die Auszeichnung junger Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, die auf dem Gebiet der Angewandten Kunst arbeiten.

Ausgezeichnet wird eine Forschungsarbeit zur Angewandten Kunst (Dissertation, Magisterarbeit, abgeschlossene Publikation). Der Preis wird an eine/einen Graduierte/n vergeben und besteht in einem dreimonatigen Forschungsstipendium am Zentralinstitut für

Kunstgeschichte. Der Preis ist mit insgesamt € 4.500,- dotiert. Über die Vergabe entscheidet eine unabhängige Fachkommission. Der Antritt des Stipendiums kann nach Absprache individuell gewählt werden, sollte jedoch innerhalb eines Jahres nach der Preisvergabe erfolgen.

Daniel Marot Fonds onderzoeksbeurzen

Het Daniel Marot Fonds heeft als doel het stimuleren van de belangstelling voor en het onderzoek naar interieurs en kunstnijverheid in Nederland. Voor het jaar 2011 stelt het fonds opnieuw twee onderzoeksbeurzen van maximaal € 1000.- elk ter beschikking, bedoeld voor Nederlandse onderzoekers (al dan niet afgestudeerd) met een onderwerp op het gebied van binnenhuiskunst of kunstnijverheid van vóór 1925. Het geld kan worden aangewend voor een studieverblijf in binnen- of buitenland, voor het bestellen of laten vervaardigen van beeldmateriaal, enzovoort. Onderzoek dat zal resulteren in een publicatie geniet de voorkeur.

The Terra Foundation for American Art annually offers ten Terra Summer Residency fellowships in Giverny, France, to artists and scholars from the United States and Europe for the independent study of American art and visual culture within a framework of interdisciplinary exchange and dialogue. During the eight-week stay, senior artists and scholars are in residence to mentor the fellows and pursue their own work. Fellowships are awarded to doctoral students researching a subject on American art and visual culture and/or its role in a context of international artistic exchange, and to artists who have completed their studies at the master’s level within the past five years. Fellows are selected on the quality of the proposed project, the level of excellence and intellectual rigor or artistic creativity achieved in the applicant’s previous studies or work, and the applicant’s ability to engage in a community environment. Terra Foundation for American Art Research Travel Grants 2011 Application Deadline for Program: January 15, 2011

The Terra Foundation for American Art Research Travel Grants support travel to the United States for research purposes. Foreign nationals enrolled in European universities whose research projects concern American art or transatlantic artistic relations prior to 1980 are eligible. Three predoctoral grants of $5,000 and three postdoctoral grants of $7,500 (for researchers who have been awarded their doctorate within the past ten years) are available. Applications must be received by one of the partnering institutions: Courtauld Institute of Art, London (www.courtauld.ac.uk); Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art, Paris (www.inha.fr); John F. The collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum spans the nation’s artistic heritage, representing outstanding visual accomplishments from the seventeenth century to the present day. Comprising more than 42,000 objects, this unparalleled collection includes special strengths in nineteenth- and twentieth-century marble and bronze sculpture, nineteenth-century landscape painting, Gilded Age and American impressionist paintings, twentieth-century realism, photography and graphic art, folk art, Latino art, and African American art.

Resources
Each scholar is provided a carrel in the Fellowship Office located across the street from the Museum. Available research resources there include a 180,000-volume library that specializes in American art, history, and biography; the Archives of American Art; the National Portrait Gallery; and the graphics collections of American Art and the Portrait Gallery; as well as a variety of image collections and research databases. Conveniently located in downtown Washington, D.C., the Museum and Fellowship Office are a short walk from other Smithsonian museums and libraries, the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the National Gallery of Art. During their stay at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, scholars will be part of one of the nation’s oldest and most distinguished fellowship programs in American art, and will have the opportunity to attend a wide variety of lectures, symposiums, and professional workshops. Short research trips are also possible.

Support
The stipend for a one-year predoctoral fellowship is $30,000, plus research and travel allowances.
